What characteristics come to mind when we think of a mother? Nurturing. Loving. Patient. Guiding. If these are the characteristics of any good mom, then how much more true is it for the Mother of God?

For most of us, our prayer lives ebb and flow, changing like the seasons. We experience springlike seasons of prayer which are full of consistency, beauty and abundance. But we also experience dark, winterlike seasons when prayers may seem unanswered or fear consumes us, leaving us feeling lost.
It’s during these less fruitful seasons that, as with any child needing the warm embrace of a mother, we can turn to Our Mother Mary for guidance and redirection. In a particular way, the rosary teaches us to place ourselves under Mary’s maternal care and helps us learn from her how to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

Mary intercedes for us
We’ve all had moments of prayer where we don’t know what to say, or we certainly don’t know how to say it. When we don’t even know where to start, instead of giving up, we can turn to Mary for help.
Like a good mother, she wants to help.
The perfect example of her generous, servant heart can be found in John 2:1-11 at the wedding in Cana.
Mary notices that the couple has run out of wine. To run out of wine during a wedding would have meant extreme embarrassment for the families, potentially bringing shame to the family name. Mary, understanding this, took the problem to Jesus. And Jesus, at the urging of his mom, performed his first miracle – turning water into wine.
Whenever we pray the rosary, Mary, the Queen of Heaven, continues to love her adopted children (you and me) in the same way that she loved the bride and groom in Cana.
And she does this by taking our needs straight to Jesus. With each intention we offer her, with each and every Hail Mary we pray, she brings our petitions to her Son: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us …

The rosary focuses our attention on her Son
The rosary helps us to pray because it focuses our hearts on Jesus. It’s no surprise, then, that Mary’s final words at the wedding at Cana, and indeed, in all of Scripture were, “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary shifts our gaze toward the One who has the power to save.
We’ve all had moments of prayer where the distractions seem to own us. We begin with a prayer of thanksgiving and then find our prayers hijacked by thoughts about the chores that await us – the dishes still in the sink from the night before or the unfinished project at work.
The rosary is uniquely designed to keep our thoughts focused on the lives of Mary and Jesus. With each bead, it’s as if Mary herself is quietly whispering to us, “Focus, child.” Like any good mom would do.
By setting our minds on the mysteries of the rosary, we surrender our thoughts to God, and our hearts become settled. As a specifically meditative devotion, the rosary keeps our eyes focused where they belong – on the beautiful mysteries of our faith – and grace fills our hearts.
As she did at the wedding in Cana, Mary continues to lead us to Jesus.
