My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

And open wide our heavenly home;

And close the path to misery.”

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
“O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.”
We have been given the priceless gift of a clear path to our Father in heaven as dearly and beloved sons and daughters of God. Though day to day life is fraught with uncertainty, we are guided by the star of Christ’s earthly ministry. As we relive those silent and pastoral scenes of Jesus’ birth, let us call to mind who we are here to know, love and serve. For we have but one to thank that the gates of heaven have been thrown open for us: our Savior, a child wrapped in swaddling clothes and laying in a manger.
Given the chance, would you travel back in time to journey with the Magi? Would you bear this perfect babe your finest gifts? Would you tell everyone you encountered that peace and love dwells incarnate in our midst?
This is our great commission as Christians: to go out into the fields and proclaim the Good News of Jesus’ advent. Knowledge of the Living Word is the source of peace, and knowledge of his sacrifice is the solace from all fear. His life is the most loving response to our fallen imperfections, his very existence is proof that he loves each of us intimately as only God’s own beloved Son could.
As St. Thérèse of Lisieux profoundly said, “A God who became so small could only be mercy and love.”
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
In Christ’s love,
Most Rev. Jacques Fabre-Jeune, CS
