Christ Our King-Stella Maris named National Blue Ribbon School
The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Christ Our King – Stella Maris School (COKSM) in Mount Pleasant as one of the 353 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2023. The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in striving for and attaining exemplary achievement. The school also received this honor in 2009.

“COKSM, in its efforts for continuous improvement, has a long tradition of providing a top-notch Catholic educational experience for our students, and we are committed to educating the whole child through our programs in academics, fine arts, stewardship and athletics,” said John Byrnes, school president. “We are very happy and proud that we have once again been named a National Blue Ribbon School!”
COKSM is a Catholic school of the Diocese of Charleston. For more than 70 years, it has been well-known in the Charleston area for its faith-based curriculum, close-knit family atmosphere and service to the community, plus academic and athletic excellence. It educates 650 students from four-year-old kindergarten through eighth grade and utilizes the president/principal administration model.
National Blue Ribbon School leaders articulate a vision of excellence and hold everyone to high standards. These schools demonstrate effective and innovative teaching and learning, and the schools value and support teachers and staff through meaningful professional learning. This point is further supported by COKSM Principal Susan Splendido.
“Our Catholic school is filled with outstanding teachers, engaged parents and hardworking students. We are blessed to be in a faith-filled community united by the goal of helping each and every student find success. COKSM’s focus is to help our students prepare for the next stages of their lives and become active members of our community,” Splendido said.
“The honorees for our 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award have set a national example for what it means to Raise The Bar in education,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. He then added, “The leaders, educators and staff at our National Blue Ribbon Schools continually inspire me with their dedication to fostering academic excellence and building positive school cultures that support students of all backgrounds to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.”
With its 40th cohort, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed approximately 10,000 awards to more than 9,700 schools.
