Sister Marcine Klocko, SSCM, died July 16 after a brief illness. She was 87. This summer, she celebrated 45 years of vowed religious life, much of which was spent in the Diocese of Charleston.
Sister Marcine served with both the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and, for a time, with the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur.
A unique aspect of her life was that, as a lay person, she was an entrepreneur. She owned a cleaning company in Columbia, S.C., partnered in a sweetgrass gift basket shop in Charleston, and owned the Charleston Candy Company — all of which contributed to the expertise in finance which she brought to her ministerial life.
Many students in Pennsylvania, New York state and South Carolina knew her as a teacher of history, economics and religion. In the Diocese of Charleston, she taught at St. Jude High School in Sumter and Cardinal Newman School in Columbia. She was briefly the assistant principal at Blessed Sacrament School in Charleston, and served as the after-hours bookkeeper for Charleston Catholic School and St. John School, North Charleston, for a number of years.
From 2006-2013, Sister Marcine was the treasurer of the SSCM’s Maria Joseph Manor Continuing Care Retirement Community, serving laity, clergy and religious in Pennsylvania. Then in 2013, when the SSCM community assumed leadership of the St. Francis Center — then known as the Franciscan Center — on St. Helena Island, she returned South as its co-director. Sister Marcine served the poor of the Beaufort area with a primary focus on emergency home repairs.
On May 20 she moved to her community’s motherhouse, to personal care, and then hospice as health issues unexpectedly escalated.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the motherhouse in Danville, Penn., on July 21. The sisters also anticipate a memorial Mass to be celebrated in the fall among her many South Carolina friends and colleagues.
She is survived by her sisters, Irene Gray and Theresa Kemp, many nieces and nephews, and her religious community.
Condolences may be sent to the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Villa Sacred Heart, 1002 Railroad Street, Danville, PA 17821.
