The students and staff of St. Mary Help of Christians School in Aiken rolled out the red carpet to welcome their new principal, Carlos Overstreet. He officially stepped into the role at the end of January. With his strong leadership background and a deep commitment to Catholic education, Overstreet is poised to guide the school toward continued success and growth.
“I’m honored to have been selected to lead an institution that combines tradition with innovation,” he said. “St. Mary’s has a rich history of fostering academic excellence, and I am excited to work alongside the dedicated staff and families to continue building on this foundation.”

Overstreet brings with him more than 10 years of experience in education. He graduated from University of California, Davis with a degree in history and teaching credentials from California State University, Sacramento. He has worked in public and Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sacramento. Before accepting the position at St. Mary, Overstreet served as the principal at Holy Rosary Catholic School in Woodland, California.
Two of the new principal's initial goals are to oversee the opening of the STEM Center, which students have begun utilizing already, and the opening of 3K and 4K preschool classes next year.
“St. Mary’s school is experiencing historic growth with the addition of the new state-of-the-art STEM Center and preschool. We want to ensure that our students are not only excelling in their academic studies, but also growing in their faith and character,” he said.
Parents and staff have shown enthusiasm about the new leadership. Katie Craney, a parent and a staff member, expressed her confidence in Overstreet’s ability to make a positive impact.
“We’ve heard wonderful things about him and his passion for the mission of Catholic education. We are optimistic about the future of our students and the school as we continue to grow and thrive,” she said.
Father Richard Wilson, pastor of St. Mary Help of Christians Church, said Overstreet is "a great fit" for the school.
“His deep faith and dedication to Catholic values will guide St. Mary’s students to grow spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally,” Father Wilson said.
He also praised Matthew Kuhn, assistant principal, who stepped into the role of interim principal while the school searched for new leadership.
St. Mary Help of Christians School is enrolling students for the 2025-2026 school year. Prospective families are encouraged to visit the school’s website, excelatstmarys.com, to learn more information and to schedule a tour.
