Adrian Dominican Sister Francis Barfield Dies at 90

Sister Frances Barfield, formerly known as Sister David Therese, died on Sept. 19 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 90 years of age and in the 73rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Frances was born in Pensacola, Fla., to David C. and Theresa (Post) Barfield. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian; and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in History from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian; a Master of Science degree in Education from Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, Florida; and a Master of Pastoral Studies degree in Pastoral Ministry from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Sister Frances spent over 30 years ministering in elementary education in Elmwood Park and Joliet, Ill.; Palatka, Tallahassee, Gulfport and Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and Georgetown, Kingstree and Greenville, S.C., which includes 10 years as principal of schools in South Carolina. She also served in parish ministry for 22 years in Winter Park and Melbourne, Fla., and Metairie, Terrytown, Gretna and New Orleans, La. She worked with the elderly for eight years in Winter Park and Melbourne, and in Givhans, S.C. Sister Frances became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2009.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Catherine Chapel Sept. 27, with committal in the Congregation Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221.
