South Carolina

From barley to wheat through fire

The culmination of the Season of Easter is Pentecost. For many of the first Jewish Christians, Pentecost was the fulfillment of some of their most ancient and important celebrations. In Leviticus 23, God gave the Israelites a set of holy days to observe. Their most important was the Feast of Firstfruits during which they sacrificed […]

Tutor program helps lift up inmates

To an inmate serving a long sentence, earning a GED can be a life-changing achievement. Many men in South Carolina’s correctional institutions, however, are nowhere near that dream because they can’t even read or do math at an eighth grade level. Volunteers with Hope for Literacy, a new interdenominational ministry, hope to change that for […]

The transfer of feast days

As each Easter Sunday arrives, commemoration of the Ascension of Christ into heaven looms. In both the Nicene and Apostle’s Creed, the Ascension of Jesus is mentioned in close proximity to profession in the Lord’s resurrection. Traditionally it is believed that Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after the resurrection. St. Luke’s Gospel says that […]

Hail Mary: Our most gracious advocate

Mary is a vital part of Catholic life all year long, but she really comes to the forefront of worship, thought and prayer as the calendar turns to May. This is the month of special prayers, devotions and festivals dedicated to the Mother of God worldwide. In many churches, traditional “May processions” are held that […]

Confirmation: The start of a lifelong journey

Patricia Bronikowski, an eighth-grader from Aiken, has been very busy for the past two years. In addition to her usual responsibilities of school, family and fun, she spent a lot of time researching saints, learning about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and performing service projects. Like hundreds of other kids her age, she was […]

A recent outbreak of the measles in the United States has brought the controversy over immunizations to the forefront again, and the Church is clear in its position on the matter.
