Sister Christine Alice Cunningham dies at 99

HASTINGS, N.Y.—Sister Christine Alice Cunningham died Oct. 7 at Andrus adult care facility in Hastings.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ann’s Church in Nyack on Oct. 11, followed by burial at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont.

Sister Christine was born July 26, 1917, in New York City to Alice Kelly and Owen Cunningham. She attended St. Michael’s High School in New York City and later earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University. She entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine on Dec. 8, 1936, and professed perpetual vows on Sept. 18, 1943.

In the Diocese of Charleston, Sister Christine spent nine years at Our Lady of Peace Church in North Augusta. Other assignments included Madonna House in New York City, and Ave Maria House and St. Augustine School, both in the Bronx. In each of these locations Sister Christine taught first grade and frequently served as a catechist for public school children. She was also active with Girl Scouts and Brownies, particularly in Langley and North Augusta, S.C.

Sister Christine also served her religious congregation as a chapter delegate.

In addition to the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine, Sister Christine is survived by her sister, Josephine Walis, and many nieces and nephews.
