Blessing of founders’ place cemetery

JOHNS ISLAND—Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone celebrated Mass on Nov. 29 for the living relatives of the founding family of Holy Spirit Church, which was previously known as Holy Ghost Church. It was followed by a blessing of the founders’ place cemetery, which was re-located next to the chapel.

The original chapel site was located on Bohicket Road. When it was sold to Habitat for Humanity, the cemetery was left in perpetual care. Msgr. Charles Rowland, pastor, recently contacted the descendants of the founding family and proposed that the cemetery be moved to the current church site.

Rose Mary Saari, a daughter of founding members Edwin and Marie Warren, said it was an honor to have her family placed at rest by the church. She attended the Mass and blessing with her sister, Edna “Betty” Warren Kiser, and others.

The parish first began in the 1930s from the home of the Warrens until 1940, when Father John J. McCarthy secured property and parishioners helped build a church. Holy Spirit celebrated 50 years in 1990 and the chapel was moved to its new location in 2010.
