St. Mary, Blessed Sacrament win diocesan volleyball tourny
St. Mary in Greenville and Blessed Sacrament in Charleston came away with top titles in the 2013 Diocese of Charleston Youth Volleyball Tournament that was held at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville recently.

St. Mary’s Lady Ducks won the gold division in the senior bracket, which consists of seventh- and eighth-grade girls, by beating Blessed Sacrament’s senior team. John Paul II won the silver bracket against St. Mary Help of Christians in Aiken.

In the junior division, consisting of fifth- and sixth-graders, Blessed Sacrament took first place, followed by St. Francis from Hilton Head and St. Mary Help of Christians. Jean Fox, athletic director at Summerville School, said they had 10 teams participate in the tournament, which is in its third year.

Lagleva places in chess tourney/St. Mary aids flood victims
GREENVILLE—Joshua Lagleva, a thirdgrader at St. Mary, took third place in the 2013 Greenville Scholastic Open Chess Tournament.

Also, students at St. Mary raised $757.75 during their recent “dress down” day. The money will be sent to Catholic Relief Services for victims of the Colorado flood.

Villanova band rocks Saints
CHARLESTON—Villanova University Band, which is currently on their fall break tour, made a stop at Charleston Catholic to perform for the students. Villanova is a Catholic university founded in 1842 by the Order of Saint Augustine.

Notre Dame awards grants
HILTON HEAD—The Notre Dame Club of Hilton Head presented scholarships and grants totaling $13,000 to John Paul II, St. Francis and St. Gregory the Great Catholic schools. Also, Brian Kurtz and Eileen Cooper, two local students attending Notre Dame, received educational grants from the club. The mission of the Notre Dame Club is to promote Catholic education in the Lowcountry and develop a pipeline to the university.

CN inducts hall of famers
COLUMBIA—A group of Cardinal Newman alumni were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame recently. Inductees include Sister Julienne Guy, OSU, Ursuline Class of ’48, for achievements and dedication to the Church; Lee A. DeHihns, ’63, for achievements in environmental law; Dr. Norma M. Khoury, ’73, for achievements in cardiology; Donna J. Walker, ’75, for achievements in philanthropy; Kevin Whitlark, ’80, for achievements in arts; Scott Walker, ’84, for achievements in technology; James Gambrell, ’91, for achievements in the military. Also, Carolyn McLendon was inducted into The John Henry Newman Society, an honor bestowed upon a non-alumnus for outstanding service to the school.

St. Andrew promotes vocations
MYRTLE BEACH—Sister Cara Nagle, of the Religious of Christian Education based in Dublin, Ireland, visited St. Andrew’s vocations club recently. The sister has lived in Paris for nine years, where she served as superior general of her order. It was established in France 200 years ago to teach young girls, who would not have been educated otherwise. Sister Cara and the club members exchanged stories and information.

Learning about safety
COLUMBIA—Students and parents from St. Joseph participate in the national “Walk to School Day” on Oct. 9. Many diocesan schools tie the annual tradition into a safety theme and invite firemen, police officers with their K-9 partners, and others to interact with the children.
