St. Joseph’s wins state in baseball, soccer

GREENVILLE- St. Joseph’s Catholic School finished the school year with two decisive state championships in boys’ baseball and soccer.

The varsity baseball team bounced back after an initial loss to Latta High School in the championship series, winning the next two games 8-0 and 10-0 to claim the 2013 state title. It’s the team’s second consecutive championship and wraps up a 27-2 season.

The soccer team completed a dominant run with a 12-0 defeat over Blackville-Hilda in the Class A boys state final. On top of posting an 18-3 record and winning back-to-back state titles, the Knights garnered national attention from Elite Soccer Report, which ranked them as the No. 1 soccer team in the state across all classifications (1A-4A), and listed them as 31st in the country.

St. Joe’s competes in the South Carolina High School League at the 1A level. They also won state championships in girls’ and boys’ crosscountry, and girls’ volleyball.

Hart earns scholarship
CHARLESTON –
Sister Mary Joseph Ritter, general superior of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy, presents Joseph P. Hart with a full scholarship from her order to attend Bishop England High School. He is a graduate of Nativity and is the son of Paula and Gary Hart.

St. Anthony hires new principal
FLORENCE –
St. Anthony School hired Michael L. Ryan as their new principal for the 2013-14 school year. Ryan, who most recently served as principal of St. Andrews Middle School in Charleston, will join St. Anthony on July 1 to prepare for his new duties.

Edwards, Kendall on select team/Millard earns soccer player of year
COLUMBIA –
Claire Edwards and Kendall Watson, from Cardinal Newman, were chosen to participate in the USA Volleyball High Performance National Program. Claire made the A1 National Training Team, which puts her in the top 20 players in the nation in her position. She will train and compete in Fort Lauderdale. Kendall made the Select National Training Program, which places her in the top 50 players in the country in her position. She will train in Colorado Springs.

In soccer news, Koty Millard was named the 2012-13 Gatorade South Carolina Boys Soccer Player of the Year by Gatorade, in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports.

St. Joseph wins science awards
COLUMBIA –
John Castellano, a fifth-grader at St. Joseph, won a state Middle/Elementary School Academy of Science award from The South Carolina Academy of Science recently. Ten other students also won awards, including regional winners Declan Carroll, Cooper McBurney and Chloe Tomblin; and school winners Anna Fuller, Mary Kelly Allen, Audrey Meyers, Cooper Schroeder, Trevor Reed, Anna Kelley and Michael McGovern. There were 673 entries.

Quattrone signs football letter
GREENVILLE – Ben Quattrone, a senior from St. Joseph’s Catholic, signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. Ben was recognized by the South Carolina High School League as an All-Region player. As part of the school’s football program since its debut in 2008, Ben helped lead the Knights to two consecutive playoff appearances, catching the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime against Lewisville to secure the school’s first playoff victory.
