Grant makes Naval Academy/Britenburg wins Eagle award
GREENVILLE—Andrew Grant, a senior at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, earned a coveted appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He was among 17,649 students who applied for 1,200 available spots.

Jordan Britenburg, another senior from St. Joe’s, won the Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award from the Boy Scout Blue Ridge Council. Jordan helped Meals on Wheels-Anderson by upgrading their entrance, replacing the cracked sidewalk and old sign with new brick signage, landscaping, safety lighting and an irrigation system. He also acquired a defibrillator for the facility and became a certified CPR/AED instructor to train the Meals on Wheels staff. It was one of 156 Eagle projects completed this year within the Blue Ridge Council, and will advance to compete at the regional level.

Tedrick, Wacker earn Duke honor
TAYLORS—Madelaine Tedrick and Genna Wacker, seventh-graders at Prince of Peace, will be honored by Duke University at a medal ceremony to be held at Furman University at the end of May. The award is for their high scores on the Duke Talent Identification Program and the SAT or ACT for high school students. The girls were chosen for participation after scoring in the top 5 percent nationally on the 2012 Iowa Assessments.

Four win handwriting contest
COLUMBIA—For the fifth year in a row, students from St. Joseph were selected as state grade-level award winners in the national Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Contest. They are: Kemp “Duncan” Wilson, first grade; Angelique Myers, second grade; Emily Berg, fourth grade; and Canaan Michel, fifth grade, who won for the second time. More than  85,000 students participated nationwide. The school will receive $800 toward educational materials and state winners compete for the title of National Champion.

Robson writes winning essay
SUMMERVILLE—Patrick Robson, an eighth-grader at Summerville Catholic School, won the Knights of Columbus Assembly 1900 essay contest on “The Importance of Religious Liberty.” Patrick’s essay advances to the state competition.
