Sister Amelia Krajcik dies at age 96

MILWAUKEE, Wis.—Sister Amelia Assunta Krajcik, of the School Sisters of St. Francis, died Jan. 9. She was 96. She served in the Diocese of Charleston, S.C., for 28 years.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Convent Chapel, 1501 S. Layton Blvd., on Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Sister Amelia was born one of six children to the late Vera and John Krajcik on Oct. 17, 1916, in Chicago. She attended St. Cyril and Methodius School where she met the School Sisters of St. Francis. After graduating from eighth grade in 1930, Sister Amelia entered St. Joseph Convent. She completed high school and postulancy and was one of 70 women to receive the white veil of a novice on June 28, 1922. She was given the name of Sister Assunta which she kept until resuming her baptismal name in the 1960s.

Most of Sister Amelia’s life was spent in education. She served as principal at St. Bernadine School in Forest Park, Ill. In 1970, she visited family in South Carolina and decided to stay. She taught in the school at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C., for nine years. She was principal of St. Peter School in Columbia, S.C., from 1979 to 1988 and was in attendance when Pope John Paul II visited the city.

For 10 years Sister Amelia was pastoral associate and director of religious education at Corpus Christi Church in Lexington, S.C. In 1998, she moved to St. Joseph convent in Milwaukee where she focused on prayer for others and serving the sisters with whom she lived.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and the School Sisters of St. Francis with whom she shared life for 80 years.
