Ursuline Sister Jean Marie Hettinger dies at age 77

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Ursuline Sister Jean Marie Hettinger, who taught at Cardinal Newman School in Columbia, S.C., from 1972 to 1976, died Nov. 17 at Mercy Sacred Heart in Louisville. She was 77.
The funeral liturgy was celebrated Nov. 21, at the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville motherhouse chapel, with burial in St. Michael Cemetery.
Sister Jean Marie was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1953. She graduated from the Ursuline Academy in 1952 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Ursuline College in Louisville, and a Master of Science degree in education from the University of Dayton in Ohio. She also pursued graduate studies in pastoral ministry and church leadership at Fordham University in New York.
During her religious life Sister Jean Marie served twice on the Ursuline Sisters General Council, in parish ministry at St. Francis of Assisi and Our Mother of Sorrows in Louisville, Christ the Healer in Edmonton, and at St. Joseph in Bardstown.
Sister Jean Marie’s early service included teaching in Louisville at Holy Spirit Elementary School, and serving as assistant principal, then principal at Sacred Heart Academy on the Ursuline Campus.
She also taught at a Catholic school in Maryland, and served as a pastoral minister at parishes in West Virginia and Alabama.
Sister Jean Marie is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Rita Hettinger; nieces and nephews, and the Ursuline community.
