Coury wins poster contest
MYRTLE BEACH—Alyssa Coury, a kindergartener at St. Andrew School, won second place in the Horry-Georgetown County Fire and Life Safety Poster and Essay Contest. Her artwork was chosen from applicants in kindergarten through second grade over all of Horry and Georgetown counties.

Lagaly, Kelly sign letters of intent
GREENVILLE—Alexa Lagaly and Kate Kelly, seniors at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, signed national letters of intent recently. Alexa will play volleyball with USC-Upstate and Kate will join the swim team at the University of Kentucky.
For the last two seasons, Alexa was named by the South Carolina High School League (1A) as All-Region, All-State, Region Player of the Year, and Coaches Association of Women’s Sports State Player of the Year, and a 2012 All-Star Player.
Kate was recently named to the Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming, is a Junior National qualifier, and is a member of the Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club YMCA National Championship Team. She was named South Carolina High School League (1A) All-State and South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) All-State for multiple seasons.

Desmond earns player of year/CN soccer teams score honor/Athletes make All-State
COLUMBIA—Brittney Desmond, a freshman at Cardinal Newman, was named Player-of-the-Year in women’s tennis by the South Carolina Independent Schools Association. Brittney was undefeated at the No. 1 position with a 13-0 record.
For the second year in a row, the Cardinal Newman men’s and women’s soccer teams earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Award. This is the sixth straight year for the men’s team and the second for the women’s. Cardinal Newman was the only SCISA team to earn this distinction, and only one of three in South Carolina. The team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire year. The boys had a 3.63 and the girls a 4.39.
Also, several athletes were named to SCISA All-State Teams. They are: Emily Davis and Claire Edwards, volleyball; Brittney Desmond, tennis; Caroline Gasser, cross-country; and Will Hicks, swimming.

St. Anthony teaches with arts
GREENVILLE—St. Anthony of Padua School received a visit from Eli Connaughton, published writer and poet. She presented a storytelling and journaling exercise as part of an arts and social studies infusion project underwritten with grants from the Metropolitan Arts Council, the NAESP and Crayola. It focuses on history and social studies through storytelling, poetry, music, illustration and dance.

Privett honored in math/Three advance in spelling bee
CHARLESTON—Brian Privett, an eighth-grader at Christ Our King-Stella Maris, placed in the top 5 percent of the nation at the recent national American Math Association Competition for seventh- and eighth-graders. Other top scorers include Matthew Kraft, Jared Pratt and Andrew Potts, who tied for second place in their school; and Emma Lawrence in third place.
Also, the following students advanced to the Lowcountry Catholic Spelling Bee on Jan. 18: Andrew Potts in first place, John Borkowski in second, and Ellis Colvin in third.
