Sisters of Charity Foundation awards $51,000 in grants

COLUMBIA—The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina recently awarded 22 Caritas grants totaling $51,000 to nonprofit and faith-based organizations across the state.

The one-year grants are for organizations to provide outreach services to the poor and marginalized with annual budgets of less than $250,000.

“We hope these end of the year grants will make a small impact and benefit these organizations in meeting the immediate needs of the underserved in our state,” said Yvonne Orr, the foundation board chair.

The awards were as follows:

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Charleston, Coastal Deanery — $3,000, to provide dental care to uninsured and underinsured adults living in poverty in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Coastal Rescue Mission Inc — $3,000, to provide food to families in need in Horry and Georgetown counties.

Count Me In To Do the Right Thing — $500 to provide the underserved in Chester and York counties with a warm coat for the winter.

Darlington Free Medical Clinic — $3,000 to provide medicine and medical supplies to the uninsured in Darlington.

EmmanuWheel — $500, to help build wheel chair ramps for low-income individuals in need in Lexington and Richland counties.

Family Promise of York County — $3,000 to help meet the basic needs of homeless families in York and Chester counties. These needs include transportation, clothing, medical, hygiene, food, cleaning supplies, work and school supplies.

Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County — $3,000 to provide diabetic supplies for those patients diagnosed with diabetes.

Friendship Medical Clinic and Pharmacy — $3,000 funding to purchase medications for low-income patients in Horry County.

Good Shepherd Free Medical Clinic of Laurens County — $3,000 to provide medication and testing supplies to chronically or severely ill low-income patients.

Greater Spartanburg Ministries — $3,000 to provide food to the elderly and low-income families with children.

Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg — $2,000 for dental services to uninsured children.

Help 4 Kids — $500 snack packs for children in Horry County who qualify for free lunch at school so they do not go hungry during weekends and holidays.

Helping Hands of Georgetown — $3,000 for an emergency food pantry.

Lab S Helping Hands — $500 funding to feed the hungry in Lee and Sumter counties.

Lowcountry Orphan Relief — $3,000 to provide clothing, underwear and socks, school supplies and basic essentials to abandoned and abused children in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Meals On Wheels Bluffton-Hilton Head — $3,000 for home delivered meals for low-income clients in Beaufort County.

Midland Park Community Ministries — $3,000 funding to purchase food for an emergency food pantry in Charleston County.

Revelation Church of Word and Deed — $3,000 funding for an emergency food pantry in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Roscoe Reading Program — $1,500 to support a program that uses therapy dogs, and provides incentives and prizes to encourage reading amongst elementary school students in Berkeley County.

St. Vincent de Paul Outreach of St. Peter Church — $3,000 for the community food pantry serving Beaufort and Jasper counties.

Sumter Free Health Clinic — $3,000 for free diabetic supplies and prescription medications for the poor and uninsured in Berkeley, Williamsburg, Orangeburg and Georgetown counties.

Teaching From the Ark Inc. — $500 funding to purchase coolers for a food pantry in Williamsburg County.
