Columbiettes approved for state council

DOUGLASTON, N.Y. — The S.C. Columbiettes auxiliaries were recognized recently as a state council by the organization’s supreme council.

The Columbiettes were founded in New York in 1939 to work in tandem with the Knights of Columbus. An affiliated auxiliary exists with the consent and approval of a local Knights council.

Since its inception in January 2002, over 200 Catholic women in South Carolina have joined the organization,  according to a press release. Recognition as a state council means the women will have a voice at the Supreme Convention in New York in August.

The state council will meet during the year and hold its first state convention in Summerville, also in August.

Newly elected state officers are from auxiliaries in Beaufort, Summerville and Columbia. They are: Florence Mucci,  president; Elizabeth Higgins, vice president; Betty Richitelli, secretary; Lorraine Catoe, sentinel; Sandra Verwyvelt, advocate; Paula Griffard, treasurer; and Joan Gavin, financial secretary.

Membership in the Columbiettes is open to all practicing Catholic women aged 18 years and older.
