Caritas Fund awards grants to organizations serving the poor in S.C.

COLUMBIA — The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awarded 27 Caritas Fund grants totaling $70,390 to non-profit and faith-based organizations across South Carolina on Oct. 29. The following organizations received grants:

Berean Community Development Corp., $3,000, assistance to low-income senior citizens with improvements to their homes, Dillon County;
Birthright of Georgetown, $3,000,  educational assistance for pregnant teenagers, Georgetown County;
Catholic Charities Counseling Services, $3,000, counseling assistance to indigent and uninsured individuals,  Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Georgetown and Orangeburg counties;
Corpus Christi Assistance Ministry, $3,000, emergency assistance for the poor, Lexington County;
FAMILY Community Development Center, $3,000, clothes, food and toys for Christmas gifts to needy families,  Richland County;
Foot2Water, $1,500, yard care and maintenance for elderly and impoverished widows, Anderson County;
Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County, $3,000, diabetic supplies for the uninsured, Newberry County;
Georgetown County School District/Kensington Elementary School,  $3,000, outreach and assistance to needy families during Thanksgiving and Christmas, Georgetown County;
Golden Corner Ministries, $1,500, brown bag boxes for the elderly poor, Oconee County;
Good Samaritan House of Fairfield County, $3,000, food and clothes for the needy, Fairfield County;
Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach, $3,000, emergency assistance for the poor, Horry County;
Life Builders ESL Ministry, $3,000,  language lab for English practice using computers and ESL software,  York County;
Loveline Outreach Ministry, $1,000, outreach ministry for female students at Gibbs Middle School, Richland County;
Med-I-Assist, $3,000, emergency prescription assistance and medical care for the indigent, Beaufort and Jasper counties;
Old Bethel United Methodist Church, $1,000, meals for the poor,  Charleston County;
Outreach Farm,  $2,890, shallow well for cattle raised to provide beef for food programs for the needy,  Georgetown and Horry counties;
Pee Dee Indian Nation of Upper S.C., $2,000, community food bank, Dillon and Marlboro counties;
Roscoe Reading Program, $2,500, a program that uses therapy dogs and provides incentives and prizes to encourage reading amongst elementary school students, Berkeley County;
Rural Mission, $3,000, repairs to severely substandard homes on Sea Island, Charleston County;
Sewee to Santee Economic Foundation, $3,000, septic tanks for elderly, disabled and handicapped citizens of the McClellanville and Awendaw communities, Charleston County;
St. Anne School,  $3,000, mobile interactive computer/whiteboard system, Sumter County;
St. Christopher’s Children, $3,000,  winter clothing for children in crisis,  Georgetown County;
St. Philip Church, $3,000, outreach center for the poor, Florence and Williamsburg counties;
St. Vincent de Paul Outreach of St. Peter’s Church, $3,000, emergency assistance for the needy, Beaufort and Jasper counties;
The Friendship Place, $1,000, milk for children that attend a hot meal program, Georgetown;
Touching Heaven Changing Earth Outreach, $3,000, food for the poor, Georgetown, Horry, Marion and Florence counties;
Wyatts Chapel Baptist Church,  $3,000, meals for the sick, elderly and needy, Union County.
