Readers help choose their news with Miscellany survey

CHARLESTON — Subscribers who participate in The Cath olic Miscellany’s readership survey will help determine the kind of newspaper they receive.

The Miscellany is conducting the survey to help provide the editorial staff with a picture of who the readers are, what they would like to see and how they would like to receive their news, whether by paper, online, or both. The survey, conducted by the Diocese of Charleston’s Office of Research and Planning, is divided by geographical location to provide the most accurate representation of Catholics in the state.

The survey includes questions about the readers’ desire for parish  and church news, preferences for internet versus paper versions, and particular columns and features. The last analysis of subscriber habits took place in 2001.

The Catholic Miscellany circulation is approximately 29,000 households across South Carolina. The annual subscription rate is $19 per year. The cost of printing and mailing the newspaper comes mainly from parish funds, but also from individual subscribers and advertisers.

The results of the survey will be compiled in a report and used to help The Miscellany’s staff respond to readers’ views about news and editorial content, and reach potential advertisers in the future. A summarized report on the findings will be included in a future issue.
