Speakers added to the roster for Fire at the Beach

CHARLESTON — Plans are still in the works for the fall celebration of Fire at the Beach.

The event for the Diocese of Charleston includes workshops, Mass and music around the theme, “Called to Holiness, Called to Family.” It will be Sept. 14-15 at the Landmark Resort in Myrtle Beach.

Along with keynote speakers Mike Patin and Father Richard Fragomeni, Kathleen Chesto has been added to the roster.

Chesto will present workshops on “Living Faith in the Family,” “Rote Prayer and Ritual,” and “Will There Be Faith on Earth?”

Chesto is billed as a woman of faith, storyteller, wife, mother and grandmother. She leads parish retreats and missions and speaks at catechetical congresses internationally. She also gives talks for doctors, therapists and caregivers of people with multiple sclerosis.

Chesto has a master’s degree in religious studies from St. Joseph College, West Hartford, Conn., and a doctorate in ministry from Hartford Seminary. Her doctoral dissertation was in family ministry.

She received the Hartford Seminary Distinguished Alumna Award, the Emmaus Award for excellence in catechesis, the NACFLM award for outstanding service to families, and the CT Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mother of the year award.

Another speaker, Mike Dubruiel, will discuss “How We Become Christ at Mass” and “Why Confession is Still Important.”

Dubruiel is a native of New Hampshire, has a bachelor’s in philosophy from St. Meinrad College in Indiana, a master’s in divinity from St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Fla., and a master’s degree in Christian spirituality from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

He has worked in several parishes in central Florida and has taught at Jesuit High School in Tampa and theology, spirituality, and homiletics at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. He is the author of several books and works in Fort Wayne, Ind., for Our Sunday Visitor Press.
