Father Raymond DuMouchel dies at age 81

CHARLESTON — Father Raymond E. DuMouchel, a retired priest of the Diocese of Charleston, died Sept. 10 at the age of 81.

A vigil service will be at 7 p.m.

Sept. 15 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 150 Wentworth St. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Sept. 16 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The rite of committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island.

Father DuMouchel was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Biddeford, Maine, a son of Albert and Marie Cote DuMouchel.

He was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School in Hartford, Conn., and St. Thomas College in Bloomfield, Conn. He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, St. Bernard Seminary in Cullman, Ala., and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Md.

He was ordained into the priesthood on May 10, 1956, in Hartford by Archbishop Henry J. O’Brien.

Father DuMouchel’s pastoral assignments in the Diocese of Charleston included: associate, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Charleston; associate, St. Joseph, Charleston; chaplain, St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Charles-ton; associate, St. Anthony, Florence; associate, St. Mary Help of Christians, Aiken; administrator, Our Lady of the Valley, Gloverville; associate, Our Lady of the Rosary, Green-ville; and pastor, St. Anne, Kingstree, and St. Philip, Lake City.

Other pastoral assignments were: pastor, St. Peter, Cheraw, and St. Denis, Bennettsville; pastor, St. Anthony, Ridgeland, and St. Mary Mission, Hampton; pastor, St. Edward, Murphy Village; parochial vicar, Holy Family, Hilton Head; pastor, St. Andrew, Bluffton; administrator, St. Anthony, Hardeeville; pastor, St. Mary, Summerton, and St. Ann Mission, Holly Hill; and pastor, St. John of the Cross, Batesburg.

Father DuMouchel retired in 1999 and returned to Charleston.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Normand Sevigny of Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, a Mass offered in his name is requested.
