Father Brovey new director of Office of Prayer and Worship


CHARLESTON — Bishop Robert J. Baker appointed Father Steven L. Brovey, pastor of Prince of Peace Church in Taylors, director of the Office of Prayer and Worship of the Diocese of Charleston, effective July 1.

As director Father Brovey will:

  • assist the bishop in promoting liturgical life in the diocese.
  • provide on-going formation and information to pastors and parish ministers through a newsletter an d workshops.
  • be a resource for pastors and parish staffs on liturgical questions. 
  • set up a network between large parishes and professional liturgical staffs and smaller parishes and missions.
  • cooperate with regional and national bodies in promoting liturgy.
  • assist in promoting diocesan liturgies.
  • monitor and assist in the design and renovation of churches and the placement of sacred art.
  • draft liturgical guidelines.

    The Commission for Divine Worship and Sacred Sacraments will be placed under the leadership of the director and will become a “working commission” to help achieve the goals of the office and broaden its current membership.

    Father Brovey was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 22, 1964, the son of George Brovey and Dorothy Bauernschub. When he was still a child, his family moved to the Charleston area, where he attended Divine Redeemer School and Bishop England High School. After his freshman year, his family moved to Cincinnati. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s Seminary College and an S.T.B. and J.C.B. in Canon Law from the American College at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop David B. Thompson on June 6, 1991.
